Dentures And Partials

#1 Denture Tooth Replacement & Repair in Colorado Springs, Co

Dentures can be worn by younger patients who have lost their teeth as well as older patients who are beginning to naturally lose their teeth with age.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are a removable prosthetic device that replaces an entire arch of missing teeth. Dentures are typically made out of acrylic, making them realistic-looking and comfortable. Your new dentures can last for anywhere from five to seven years when taken care of properly. Dentures not only enhance your smile by replacing missing dentition, but they can fill in sunken areas of the face, giving a more youthful appearance.

Why are Dentures needed?

Dentures are normally needed if you’re missing all of your teeth or have decayed, loose or compromised teeth. Patients with severely advanced gum disease may need to have many or most of their existing teeth removed, causing the need for a full denture. Dentures can be worn by younger patients who have lost their teeth as well as older patients who are beginning to naturally lose their teeth with age. An exam and consultation are needed before determining if full dentures are right for you.

What makes you a good candidate for Dentures?

Dentures are ideal for most patients who are completely missing their teeth. Extractions may be required before being fitted with a denture, but this can easily be done at your own convenience. Dentures themselves require no surgery and are made personally for each patient. This provides a comfortable, easy fit that you’ll feel confident wearing each day. Dentures are easy to care for and can be removed and soaked overnight for optimal freshness and bacterial removal.

Denture FAQs

What denture options are available?

The team at Alpine Dentistry offers an array of treatment plans for patients of all ages. From the initial consultation to the first denture fitting, or a later denture relining or repair, you can trust this expert team to deliver nothing but the best. Denture options at Alpine Dentistry include:

  • Metal framework partial dentures
  • Acrylic partial dentures
  • Dental implants and crowns
  • Denture relines
  • Soft denture liners
  • Implant-supported dentures

The licensed denturists make all their dentures in the dental labs at Alpine Dentistry. This is a great advantage, as you can see your dentures throughout the process. Along the way, your denturist can modify the fit and make changes to ensure your final smile is one you adore.

Since your dentures are made in-office, the turnaround time is much faster than it would otherwise be. Some other dental practices send dentures to a lab for fabrication, which can take weeks.

What are immediate dentures?

Have you lost your teeth as a result of an illness, injury, or prolonged decay? Do you need full dentures? If so, immediate dentures might be the right choice for you. Immediate dentures mean you never have to be without teeth.

Keep in mind, though, that immediate dentures do not have a “try on” period and can take some time to feel normal. They need to be regularly relined to ensure a continued, comfortable fit.

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. The most common type of partials has a cast metal frame. If you’re a good candidate, your denturist will measure your jaw and build models of your mouth so they can construct your new set of dentures in the lab accurately and efficiently.

Partial dentures with metal frames do not need dental adhesives to stay in place. They have clasps that securely anchor to existing teeth.

Acrylic partial dentures are less expensive than metal ones but don’t last as long. Acrylic partials are usually a short-term solution that’s worn while your dentist makes permanent bridges or partials.

Where do I go for denture repairs?

What to expect with the Denture procedure?

If several teeth need to be removed before a denture can be placed, this procedure will be done prior to being fitted with a new denture plate. You will then need to come into our office to have impressions taken of your gums and any remaining teeth in the mouth. These impressions are used to carefully create a new denture for you to wear. You’ll come into our office and have the denture placed and adjusted as needed. Your new denture will fit comfortable and allow you to eat, chew and speak normally. If you’ve never worn dentures before, it may take a few weeks for you to get used to wearing them. It’s important to soak and brush your dentures daily to remove bacteria, plaque and to get rid of odors.

What are Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are similar to full dentures in that they are a removable appliance, but they are different because the appliance only has several teeth attached to it. Partial dentures are specific to patients who still have most of their natural teeth, but who have a lot of teeth missing to warrant needing a prosthetic device. The partial denture is worn similarly to an orthodontic retainer and clips easily onto either the upper or lower arch. You can remove the partial denture any time it needs to be cleaned or to soak it overnight.

Are There Alternatives for Dentures?

When would Partial Dentures be needed?

Partial dentures are normally needed if you are missing a lot of your natural teeth. You may still have many healthy teeth in your mouth that do not need to be extracted but the partial is there to fill in spaces between missing teeth. Partials can prevent your existing teeth from shifting and can improve the look and feel of your smile. Partials, like full dentures, are made specifically for each patient so that they fit comfortably and correctly. Your partial denture can last for many years before it will need to be replaced. If you’ve never worn a partial denture before, it may take you a few weeks to get used to how it feels and sits in the mouth. The procedure to create the partial is similar to full dentures, but only several teeth are added to the appliance.

Alternative Options

Patients may enjoy the benefits of alternative options to dentures. There is a procedure that combines implant dentistry with dentures. Those that need complete dentures can benefit by having a secure way to have anchored dentures using implant-supported dentures. These snap-in dentures are somewhat interchangeable and a great option for a stronger and more secure fit.

If you live in the Colorado Springs CO area, we can examine your gums and let you know if you are a good candidate for the procedure. In this scenario, an impression is taken of your mouth in order to create a denture that will be secured in place using implants.

Once created, metal posts will be implanted under your gums, and the dentures secured to it. This way patients get the benefits of how quickly dentures can be created and the convenience of the stability that can only come from using implant technology. What is a Stay Plate?

A stay plate is a temporary partial or full denture that is placed in the mouth after teeth have been extracted and are healing. Having a permanent denture placed immediately after surgery can affect the fit and require new plates to be made. The stay plate is responsible for enhancing your smile while the underlying gum tissue and bone are healing. The stay plate is only a temporary solution and needs to be followed with a permanent denture or partial.

Why might you need a Stay Plate?

You may be advised to have a stay plate made if you’re going to be having several or all of your teeth removed. After the teeth are removed, the gums and underlying bone need time to heal. For most patients, heal time can be several months long. Instead of being without teeth during this time, a stay plate is designed to help create a natural-looking smile as well as make it easier for you to eat, chew and speak.

What makes you a good candidate for a Stay Plate?

Most patients who have had teeth extracted or are going to have teeth extracted can benefit from a stayplate. This temporary denture option is relatively durable and can withstand quite a bit of pressure and force when worn. Once your gums and underlying bone have healed after surgery, you will need to have permanent dentures made. The permanent partial or full denture is designed to create a natural-looking smile.

What happens during the procedure for a Stay Plate?

After you have had teeth extracted, we will take impressions of your mouth. These impressions are sent to a lab where a stay plate is made for you. The stay plate will be placed into your mouth and adjusted for a more comfortable fit. The stay plate is completely removable, so you can take it out when and if you want. Once the gums and underlying bone have healed from the extractions, you’ll need to come back in to have the permanent appliances made for you.

If you need a stay plate after having teeth extracted, call our office and we can schedule an appointment to come in for a consultation.
