What is a 3D Cone Beam CT Scan?

A dental CT scan uses a type of cone beam technology that creates a 3D representation of your mouth. The scan is most often used prior to more advanced procedures, like complicated surgeries and dental implant placement. We use the patented PlanMeca ProMax 3D, which provides a clear, crisp image of underlying bone, tissue and nerve pathways. A CT scan is essential to helping the doctor see areas that have underlying nerves and bone mass.

Why might you need a 3D Cone Beam CT Scan?

You may need to have a CT scan done prior to a more complicated procedure. Procedures that involve surgery, especially in areas where nerves are present, will benefit greatly from a comprehensive 3D scan using the PlanMeca ProMax 3D. The scan is done easily, quickly and safely in our office. We are happy to provide you with a copy of this imaging upon your request.

What makes you a candidate for a CT Scan?

Before a procedure is started, we will determine if a CT scan is needed. CT scans are important for complicated dental procedures and are essential in providing safe, reliable dental care. We can answer questions regarding the image to help you better understand what is being seen. With the help of an exam and consultation, we can decipher if one of these scans is necessary.

What can you expect when having a 3D Cone Beam CT Scan done?

CT scans are incredibly easy, with many patients finding them far more comfortable than typical dental x-rays. You will first stand in the middle of a circular machine and bite onto a bite bar. The machine will then circle your head and you will be instructed to stand still. The machine is taking an image while it circles around your body. These scans are safe and effective for most patients. Once the CT scan is finished, we can continue with your consultation regarding potential dental procedures.
